Hi Patrick,
I have the four speed manual on my site, but I bet you already have
images similar to those. But, to answer your questions:
1. Yes, the throwout bearing is very similar to the 5 speeds...it pulls
right out of the back. There is an o-ring in the outer body as well as
the standard pushrod o-rings (like you get from Moto International,
etc.)
2. Unfortunately, there is not an o-ring to seal the shifter shaft. This
has been the source of weapings, drippings, and leaks in the 4 speeds
for years. When John Ulrich and I shimmed my four speed, we put a
generic o-ring between the shift shaft and the shift shaft arm on the
outside...it works okay. I think we also put one on the inside, up
against the inside of the triangle cover. This certainly isn't an ideal
fix. I suppose the real fix is to have a circular channel machined into
the cover plate so that an o-ring could be installed - just like the
five speeds have.
3. The small rear-triangular cover can be pulled with the engine and
transmission in place. If you have it out already, then do it then (much
easier)...but I wouldn't pull the transmission just for this. It will be
easier if you pull the left side exhaust and starter...it's tight in
there. Remove all the linkage and then remove the bolts. Be careful as
you remove the cover plate not to twist or turn the shift shaft. It is
attached to a gear of sorts that interfaces with some gears on the shift
drum. You don't want to turn the shift drum. If you do move the gear,
then when you go to put it back in, you'll be off one tooth and then it
is a bear to figure out - especially with the transmission in place. So
be careful. Once inside you'll be able to replace the gasket, the shift
return spring, and play around with o-rings. If this is clear as mud,
let me know. I have a dissassebled 4 speed under the workbench and I'll
take some pictures for you.

OK loopers, time for me to ask for help. I learned all I know from an Eldo 5-speed. Don't even own one any longer. Someone is asking me for help with a trans leak on a 4-speed. Does the throwout bearing system just pull out the back of the rear cover in the same way that a 5-speed does? Simple o-ring seal on the outer body? Also, does the actual shifter shaft have an internal o-ring? I'm looking at a parts explosion which shows no shift shaft o-ring, but the cutaway of the rear cover seems to show an internal groove which would retain such a ring. Can't believe that the 4-speed is fundamentally different than the 5 speeds and small blocks that I am far more familiar with. If it comes to pulling the rear cover, can it be done in place or would I be better pulling the engine/trans unit and standing it on its nose? Does anyone have a good 4-speed breakdown manual? Maybe a few scans of relevant pages for me? Patrick Hayes Fremont CA |
