David, I'm assuming you had a DYNA system go out on you. I don't see any reason why you can't relocate the condensor anywhere on the bike as long as the connection are there. If you are having trouble, though, you may want to stick with the stock configuration until you get it running. |
It will be much easier to put them by the coils because the generator is
so close to the distributor. I had to take a big chunk out of the
generator to get it to fit in the first place so the stock location will
require a little Houdini mechanics. Thanks for the very correct advice.

Are you trying to start trouble Bob? ;)
This isn't just the Cabin Fever fiddling that Mark has commented on. I
am always looking for ways to "improve" my bike. The first black box I
tried was on my single point '72 Eldo. I hooked up a Boyer Bransdon
gizmo that basically a CDI box the size of a pack of cigarettes. It
worked fine for a few years until it mysteriously croaked in the middle
of the Queensboro bridge. I had to duck-paddle my bike to safety and
had no sparks until I pulled the Boyer box and restored the stock
hookup.
My current Eldo '75 project was conceived with the idea that it would
have every possible advantage to make it reliable and easy to use as it
is in use 90% as a commuter bike. Manfred Hecht built the '77 950cc SP
motor to stock specs and installed the Dyna as well. It always started
instantly and ran perfectly -- for a couple of years until the Dyna
myteriously died. I didn't make it all the way to the bridge this time
but the bike was chugging on one pot so I turned around and made it
home. (I was thinking of Charlie and his Falcone at the time)
Further testing has indicated that it might have been a Dyna coil that
blew and took the box with it, but it's back to stock for me. The real
advantages of electronic ignition are not that noticable on the street
and points are easier to fix in the boonies.
