I think the biggest problem people have with the silicone sealers is they
use to much. If I have to use a sealer, I use the old Indian head shellac
but the only problem is the gaskets can not be reused as that stuff is
permanent bond, tearing the gasket when the part is removed

Hi Ray,

I would agree with your approach, although sometimes I'll use grease
instead of motor oil. I try to avoid using the goo, but I'm not afraid
to use it on some things. The key, in my opinion, is to use a very light
coating of it.

When do I use goo? Well, I choose to use it when the consequences of a
leak involve a lot of my time to dry it up again. On a Guzzi, that's
pretty much limited to the gaskets in the bell housing. I haven't had
trouble with transmission gaskets leaking, so I don't goo those. I also
use it to seal up the neutral indicator switch (not the gasket, but on
the metal rod that fits through the plastic base - remove rod, clean,
cover with goo, reinsert, done).

I think that opinions will vary widely on this topic, but I would expect
to hear that more people avoid it whenever possible/prudent.

Gunnar,
I like to use a small amount of motor oil, just to hold things in place,

unless there is some particularly bad spot where goo is advised. I think

the trick is good mating surfaces, cleanliness, and proper tightening.

In your opinion/experience, is it better to install motor gaskets
(except headgasket) with or without a glue or silicone gasket material?
