The alternator on my old '96 Ural was a Russky unit. Looked like it was
carved from aluminum with stone implements. The regulator/rectifier
looked like a badly executed Heathkit. You actually had to flip a switch
under the seat to kill power to the field when you shut it off. It came
like that from the factory. I never had any problem with it though.
Hopefully, the newer ones have improved. The best part is that it was
gear driven from the cam.
