A local fellow (Vern Goodwin) who has YEARS of first hand experience
with old marques showed me bikes in his 'collection' with various
degrees of use (hardly to daily) that all of their aluminum looked
'freshly cast'. He said he uses High Temp paint in an aluminum color and
he cleans the casting completely and lets it dry. Then he paints it and
while the paint is still wet he wipes it with a cloth rag. He said this
in effect "seals the pores" of the casting thereby preventing the
dirt/grease from being able to 'get in'. It also provides minimal
"color" because it is wiped away while wet. He swears by it and has done
it for years. I must admit that 'painting' the aluminum seemed odd but I
trusted him to set up my sidecar and when I do the teardown/cleanup of
my motor/tranny I'm going to give it a try.
