There is a piece of rubber in that switch that is compressed to allow the contacts to close. There is part of the travel. Most of the new cables I have seen are pretty wimpy too, and will stretch pretty easily. You could probably fix this by making up a heavy duty cable without a brake light switch. Moto International sold me a front brake cable for my Eldo w/o the
switch. I haven't installed it yet, however.
