I think it is pretty common for there to be so much travel in the brake
lever. That doesn't mean it is a good thing though. Do you have a front
brake switch in the cable? There is a piece of rubber in that switch that
is compressed to allow the contacts to close. There is part of the
travel. Most of the new cables I have seen are pretty wimpy too, and will
stretch pretty easily. You could probably fix this by making up a heavy
duty cable without a brake light switch. Wish I knew where to buy those
already made up.

My 71 did not have this problem so much, it had a good feel and once you hit the mid point it pretty much was hard to pull it any further to the handlebar (didn't need to pull it any harder than that to get it to stop). I thought I had the brake adjusted good in that the handle is harder to pull than it was before, and when spinning the wheel and pulling the brake, the wheel stops instantly with a little pull of the handle. Granted I will need to pull harder while the bike is in motion, I think it may still be OK, but when sitting still and grabbing the brake handle, with enough of a pull, you can get the handle to touch the handle bar. Is this OK/normal, or do I need to fix something?
