I can't remember who wrote about having the symptoms of a broken shift
return but found out it wasn't broken.
I ran into a similar situation today while shimming a five-speed. While
assembling everything, I had inadvertently pushed the splined shaft for
the shifter arm far enough into the case that the legs of the springs
came off the adjustable shaft on which they bear. Acted just like a
busted spring until I took off the back cover again and bashed it back
into position. Could possible work for you?
