Hi Keith,

Spent most of the day starting the cleanup process of the new Ambo and came across a few things that I can't remember the answers for: 1. My tank has the old suicide cap. Are these still available? I cleaned it up pretty good but was wondering if they were available. If they are, I may just replace it. |
of old stock.
2. Is it normal for some oil to weep out of the drive shaft boot? My 71 did not do this. This one has a new boot on it, the front part closest to the tranny has a drop waiting to hit the floor, not much, but is this normal? Is there a seal inside that may need to be replaced? Rear side of boot also was slightly wet. I just installed new clamps and torqued them up pretty well. |
seal. Or someone may have just put a bit of lube in the boot to try and
help the u-joint live longer. With a new boot it shouldn't leak though.
3. The right side of the engine casing must have cracked open at one time and has since been repaired (obvious repair as you can see a glop of solder just under the cylinder head by the last waffle line if that's what they are called). I sort of remember reading about this but don't remember what the cause was and if this was common. |
Never heard about any engine cases cracking except some of the very
earliest V700s. What looks like solder may actually just be not too
perfect casting from the factory.
4. I pulled the gen belt cover off to polish it and while inside, I squeezed the belt to check the tension. I noticed when I did this that the gen moved downward a little and touched the top of the engine casing where it sits. Where does the gen bracket crack as I believe I may have a suspect gen bracket, and how do I fix it if it is busted. I remember there was sort of way to reinforce the bracket, don't recall how. Other strange thing was that there were no extra spacers in front of the pulley wheel. Either they are all in the center or some are behind the pulley on the engine case side, else I am missing a bunch. |
Could be the bracket is okay, but the bolts holding it to the top of the
engine are loose or broken off. Harper's sells a heavier made bracket
and if there's a space between the bottom of the generator and the
engine case you'll need to make up a shim to fill the gap. Also will
need to make sure the locating dowel is still present and it's hole
isn't all worn out. There's a bunch of good tips about this on Mike
Skaggs' website: (http://www.classicguzzi.com)
As for parts, I have quite a bunch of parts that I will be selling once I get time to take a good inventory and take some digital pictures. I figured I would e-bay it all, but wanted to throw these parts out here on the board to my fellow loop owners for 1st dibs. Here is the list so far: - extra wheels (complete wheels with good brake shoes) - spare set of brake shoes - dual seat, recovered with Moto Guzzi silk screen on back and center leather handle - looks like a Harpers cover. - Wixom trunk, black with white pinstipes, nice and shiny but on an angle it looks like there are some star cracks on the top, not bad - original handlebar mounted windshield - rear drive (geared for sidecar) - original gearing for above drive - drive shaft/U-joint for above drive - oil pan - regulator (believed to be in good working order per Mick, needs to be cleaned) - 4 matching turn signals with arms, nice shape - good starter with bad solenoid If interested in any of these parts, send me an e-mail and make me a fair offer.
