I've done the same thing, Bruce. In fact, the one I made was for the
output shaft on my 4 speed Ambo transmission. For it, I found that a
craftsman 1 1/16" deep well socket worked well. If I had to deal with
that nut on a regular basis, I would have a machine shop create a high
quality socket. But, for my in frequent use, the socket has served me
well.

Charlie,
I've made two ring nut sockets - one for my Alfa and one for the
Eldo. I bought a cheap 1/2" drive socket from AdvancedAuto which had
the
correct (or near correct) OD. I marked the socket for the pins and took
my
right angle grinder and removed 95% of the waste. Then used a hand file
to
get it to fit just right. It took only 30 minutes to make the tool once
I
had the socket.

I'm not much of an advocate of a punch (use a brass rod) and hammer
but they do come in handy.

Subject: Tool for ring nut?

I'm looking for a good quality tool to remove/install the ring nut (with

4 notches around the circumference) on the output shaft of a 4 spd.
trans. Long ago I borrowed one from the local dealer, but he's since
closed shop. The ones on MG Cycle's site won't work because it needs to
fit over a longer shaft and I need to be able to hold the shaft as well.

Looks like the previous "mechanic" used a punch or chisel! Guess I could

make one, but who knows when I'll have the time. Any suggestions?

Charlie
