I want to check the u-joint on my '74 Eldorado. Does anyone have a step by step approach for doing this. Any maintenance to be done once inside, without removing/tearing down the joint? Do you guys do this on a regular schedule? I'm not hearing any noise or feeling any vibration. Just got the bike in May, previous owner replaced the rubber boot, don't remember if he said anything about how the joint looked. BOB |
Bob,
The procedure I developed after suffering a failure of a u-joint at
freeway speed on my first Ambassador was this:
With the bike on the center stand and in gear remove the clamps and
slide the boot out of the way. Rock the rear wheel back and forth
looking and listening for excess movement and noise. I then would grab
the yoke that is visible and try to move it side to side.
This is the procedure that I USED TO USE. After missing a failing
u-joint with this inspection procedure while on the road in Indiana a
month ago I will NO LONGER RELY on anything less that an In My Hand
examination.
The motor and tranny will slide forward far enough while supported by a
floor jack to facilitate removal of the u-joint.
Ride Safe,
