I like this method, it assures that the slides are seated and that the
idle screws are doing the work of holding the slides up to position at
idle, then on first pull off idle the slides come evenly.
These carbs also have a idle mixture screw and the Chiltons manual gives
good starting points. (I assume by looking at the carbs when I rebuilt
them that the mixture screw is only active at or near idle then the
slide pin position and jet size comes into play?)
Chiltons does not go into a method of dialing them in further and they
call them idle speed screws. The larger screw with the spring is what I
would consider a idle spring screw as it sets the slide height. This is
the smaller screw that sets the air/fuel ration at idle.
In older bikes it was adjusted by setting to the book starting point and
backing off until the cyclider begins decreasing RPMS, then bring it in
and as the RPMS increase keep turing in until it begins to drop off
again, stop and back out 1/4 turn. This gives you a "just rich enough
mixture"
Chiltons does not discuss this and I think this mixture adjustment may
be a key player in the right cylinder running too hot at idle and around
town.

Hi, Scott. This is what I have done in the past with good results. First, loosen the throttle cables. Then adjust the slides on each carb using the big screw on each carb with a spring on it. Adjust each carb so taht if you unplug the plug for the other cylinder, the cylender you are working on will run for about four firings before stalling. When you have them both set like that, adjust the cables so that both pull off idle at the same time. This I do by removing the air cleaner(s) and putting a chop stick or similar object under each slide and sticking out the back of the carb. When you crack the throttle open just a little, the carb with the least slack in the cable will move the stick first. Adjust until both move at the same instant.
