Lannis,

It certainly sounds like you are overqualified to work on Square Slides!
Get in there & fix it! I bet you could get them running sweet without
taking them off the intake stubs-here's what I'd do...

1) Buy a spray can of carb cleaner.

2)Pull the float bowls, the idle mixture screws, and the main jet
holder/accelerator pump body-this is the brass assembly that the main
jet screws into; also what the bowl retaining nut threads onto. Be
watching for the atomizer to fall out as you withdraw the pump body .

3) Spray & wipe out the swarf from the bowls. Spray into the idle mix
screw hole using the straw that comes with the can of carb cleaner. Look
for spray coming out of the idle jet, which is adjacent to the main jet
holder/accelerator pump inside the float bowl. An air blast would be
nice, but not required.

4)Disassemble & clean the accelerator pump as follows; remove main jet,
unscrew jet holder (there is a spring under there). Remove the spring &
the pump piston. The piston has a check ball inside-wrap the piston in
something (I used a rubber glove recently for gription) and secure
lightly in a vice/clamp, then disassemble the pump- careful, the check
ball is small! Clean it all up with the spray & reassmble.

5) Check the jet sizes. Can't help you with numbers-perhaps others
could.

6) Put it all back together & give it a try. Might want to smear a
little oil on the choke jet o-ring, the little one that plugs into the
bottom of the float bowl-you'll know what I mean when you see it.

7)You might want to pull the tops to see where the needle is positioned.
There are 3 slots on each needle-just like Amals, only it's easier to
move the needle on Dellortos-intuitively obvious. Not sure which slot is
recommended-perhaps try the middle one.

It will probably take you longer to go to the store to get the can of
carb cleaner than it takes you to do the above procedure. These carbs
are not any more complex than Amals, and in my opinion, easier to make
work right.

Good Luck!

Well, I'm getting it a little bit at a time.

My '75 Eldo starter problem was a combination of old connections and a
duff Marelli starter relay. Cleaned up all the starter circuit
connections, replaced the sparking and arcing Marelli with a $3.99
Federal-Mogul DF005 30A from AutoZone (thanks, Mike), and off she goes.

NOW I've figured out why the P.O. had adjusted the 'choke' cables so
that there was no slack in them and they were sitting slightly open all
the time. It's the only way the bike will run.

Now that I've adjusted those cables so that they fully shut off the
"starting jet" fuel when the lever is closed, I've found that I have to
keep the lever open some for the bike to run at all.

It starts right up on full choke in a 40 degree shop (too lazy to light
the kerosene burner), and will warm up idling pretty well as I slowly
close the lever. But if I close it all the way, it will backfire
through the carbs and buck and miss and cut off. I've let it warm up
good, then rode it up the road with some choke on, and shut the choke
off while running at 3-4000 RPM in third gear, and she'll start spitting

back and missing and cutting off till I cut the choke back on. With any

choke at all it runs too rich and emits black smoke. The slides are
synchronized for mechanical motion, anyway.

Can't imagine that it came out of anyone's shop set up like that. It
has K&N pod filters (clean and oiled) and stock police pipes with the
baffles missing. Would an Eldo be so sensitive to jetting that maybe it

has the stock jets and it's way too lean with the K&Ns and pipes?

Maybe the best thing to do would be to send the carbs to someone who
knows what's what, and have them check them over and jet them
appropriately for a 1000cc Eldo with K&Ns and "open" pipes, whatever
that jetting might be, and I would just install and sync and adjust
them. Any suggestions?

Lannis
