Maybe this is normal for a loop motor, I have much Guzzi and automotive
experience, but only had one other loopframe, a 70 Ambo. I only kept it
about three weeks as I was riding other more exotic stuff (Laverda Jota,
750GT Duck, etc.)at the time so I traded it for a 850-T. That was a
decade or more ago. Anyway, I have a 74 Eldo w/amals. It has 29k miles
according to the original owner who said the speedo worked. He was
right, it worked, but the drive gear in the transmission had been
removed (say stolen, or "sourced") along with many other parts, so I
really do not know how many miles are on it but I think it is close.
Here is what I hear. At just over 3000 RPM a fairly loud, sharp rap,
slap, tap, you name it kicks in and drops off above 4000. It is loudest
in a neutral load (not accelarating or deaccelarating)or very slight
load. It sounds high up, towards the front and possibly louder on the
right(could be my better ear!). When I got the bike back in August It
had not seen much riding or maintenancein years and I found the oil
looking like metalic paint. By advice from this board I removed the pan,
replaced it and then changed and strained the oil twice in the next 100
miles and it looked fine. I have adjusted the valves twice to .006 int.
.008 exh. If I am doing it right that should not be the problem.
Although I have wondered why if you adjust the valves at TDC it seems
the clearance actually increases at other positions. Could it be normal
slop/wear and chatter in the timing gears? The bike runs great and does
not smoke or use oil.
Sooooooo, what do you all think?. Is it normal for one of these engines?
Thanks in advance for the advice/answers.
