Hi Jeffrey,
I like to ride them all winter so I NEVER put them "away".
However I used to put my old 1940 Chevy and Model A Ford away ,along
with the other cages for the winter. We also store some of the older
concept cars at work . Much of the storage damage is from dust settling
from all around and moisture coming through the concrete floor .The dust
releases acid in the presence of moisture . A sheet of poly film spread
under the bike will help keep the moisture that is part of the thermal
cycling from moving up to the bike . A breathable cover like a bedsheet
will help keep the dust off if laid across the top .The sheet will not
trap dampness like a non breathable cover.
Wash , Dry well and wax the chrome and paint. Boat USA and some of the
better hardware stores sell "Boeshield" , a spray on coating developed
by Boeing as a corrosion barrier. You can spray it on the bare metals
for added protection, wipe the excess off lightly .
Keep an eye out for me this winter ,see ya on the road !

Midwesterners (or anyone else that gets cold winters): Anybody got any good tips on proper steps for winter biek storage. I've got an unheated garage and it pains me to think about what the frost/thaw cycle does to my bikes. Here are some steps that I take but I'm always looking for more protection: -wash -remove batteries and put them on a trickle charger in my basement -fill up fuel tanks and add some fuel stabilizer -fogging oil in the cylinders -cover I hear that some people treat the chrome/unpainted metal. What works best for this? Do you wax them? Anything else to add to storage steps? I've got something called a "Car Capsule" for my '65 Mustang that is basically a huge ziplock bag that has a fan that constantly runs to keep it inflated and runs air through it to prevent any frost from ever forming on the car. It seems to work pretty well and because I have secured heated storage for my Mustang this winter I am thinking about using it for my bikes.
