John,
Setting points gap is a piece of cake. Remove plugs from cylinders, and
take the cap and rotor off. Turn motor over (while looking at the
points) and stop when it's at it's most open point. Use a wrench on the
front engine bolt (the pully bolt) to turn the motor over. Don't worry
too much about being 'exactly' at the apex of the cam on the dist. Then
stick a feeler gauge in there. If you need to adjust the gap, just
unscrew the one screw (loose, not all the way out), and there's a little
dimple in the base of the points that you can put a small screwdriver in
and, by turning it, open or close the points. Or, take the screw out,
remove points, put them in your 'safety kit' and replace with a new one.
Lightly screw the points down, and adjust. Its real easy. The little
screw invariably jumps out of sight, so be ready to pick it up with a
magnet.
Oh, another thing- you mentioned that the carbs were adjusted 'as close
to spec as possible'. If that's the case, they probably need to be
adjusted because there is a lot of variation in carbs and cables. I use
the 'put your hands behind the exhaust and blip the throttle' method.
Good luck, and if you really need help, invite someone over (cold beer
helps)
Cheers,
Jason

Bruce, I replaced the caps and plug cables about four years ago using the NGK caps. It worked well but my symptoms lately have been a missfiring, especially on the left side and eventually to the point of no Idle at all. I dissassembled the VHB 29's first, cleaned them and reassembled them but the symptom continued. Also, the pilot and main jets numbers were unreadable so I ordered new 45 and 145 jets so I don't cross them up since the fit interchangeably and I can't tell them apart. Another lesson learned the hard way but this was only a $14.00 lesson The last time the points were adjusted and cleaned was 1998 about 5000 miles ago so I feel like the are in need of something and since these parts are cheap I went ahead and purchased them. I replaced the gaskets on the VHB's as well and set the screws as close to spec as possible. I already switched the coil and regulator so when the jets arrive I will reassemble everything and if the problem continues I will beg for the next logical step in diagnosis. The thing I fear the most is the unknown which is setting the points. All advice is welcome. Thanks |
