Loopers,
I have a buddy (who owns an Ambo with a sidecar
attached) who's Sea Bee reserve outfit got called up about a month ago.
Right now he's sitting in Kuait pulling Gen Set duty & leaning up
against a 50 cal, staring out into the Gulf, watching the cargo ships
come and go. Last winter Brent pulled his engine & had another guy
rebuild it, but he never got around to re-installing it into the rig.
Before he left we made a deal that I would get his rig squared away
prior to his return, which looks like it won't be until March 04. So
over the past month whenever I get a few moments free, I go over to his
garage & do a little work.
Yesterday I went over & pulled the swingarm & rear
drive. I wanted to give it a good cleaning & I wanted to investigate
some slop that I noticed when I twisted the U-joint back & forth. It
seems that the slop is located between the coupling, the drive shaft,
and the rear drive input shaft. I didn't have time for a close
inspection, but the drive shaft splines appear to be fine, as were the
rear drive input shaft splines-I think the wear (if any) is in the
coupling.
My question is how much slop is normal? If I
had to guess, I'd say there was about 0.030 clearance between splines
of the coupling and the drive shaft, and a bit less between the coupling
and the rear drive input shaft. I really don't think this will pose any
problem in the near future, but I would like to get the list's read on
it.
Your thoughts on the matter would be appreciated-Thanks!
