Subject: Eldorado ??

I just picked up a 1974, Disc brake, Amal equiped, civilian Eldorado
with 28k showing on the clock (it is currently not working). It is a
rat, but I did get it from the son of the original owner and it has the
original hard bags and fairing. It is not the first Loopframe I have
owned, I briefly owned a 71 Ambsador and sold it to get an 850T (which I
wish I still had!).
Anyway, I have a couple of questions that I would like opinions on.
After I rebuilt the Amals, fitted two new throttle cables, filed the
badly pitted points, installed a couple of used spark-plugs from my EV,
adjusted the valves and timed it by ear it ran pretty good. Actually, it
ran better than good. It pulled like a train, idled smoothly, did not
smoke and had no serious blow-by. I have no idea how it was maintained
but I can tell you it was rarely cleaned and appears to have been
painted with spray-bombs!
Here are the questions; First, when I changed the oil I found NO metal
on the drain-plug magnet but the oil reminded me of metalic paint. Is
this OK? And secondly, I set the valve clearance to the same spec as my
1100 Sport for starters. I felt for TDC on each cylinder with a
screwdriver and adjusted both intake and exhaust at TDC. Is this the
correct procedure? It seems the clearance gets wider at other positions
of the crank and they sound loud when running. And what is the proper
clearance? (I promise to get a copy of Guzziology soon).
Thanks in advance for the opinions. Some time in the near future I may
be looking for the missing parts (tool boxes, centerstand, and front
fender stays) but I am going to try the seller again first. Ride safe.
