Hi Joe,
I tried unsuccessfully to buy two of those alternators for Gary Cheek and myself, but the stock had already been sold. The supplier only accepted orders mailed in and I was a "day late and a dollar short".
I can't remember for sure who modified the VW Type III generator either, but it runs in mind that it was Tom Bowes. Cheers,
Charlie.

Hey Charlie, I did a search of the archive-came up with this message from you posted on Nov 27, '01.... A while back (just after the W. NY Rally I think) the topic dujour on the list was putting an alternator on a Loop. I've been looking for just the right alternator since then to try and work up a conversion "kit." Yesterday I received a catalog from one of my lawnmower parts suppliers and lo and behold there's this nice small Hitachi alternator for $69 new! Originally it was for a Yanmar diesel tractor. It has an internal regulator and puts out 40 amps. The pulley diameter is slightly smaller than the Bosch generators and the outside diameter is about the same. Looks like it could be mounted to a modified generator bracket and would not require any modification to the belt cover done that way. They only have 26 of them so I'll try and get one a.s.a.p. and see how it will work out. If it doesn't, well I can always upgrade one of my tractors! Cheers, Did you ever pick up that alternator & try it out? I remember back around that time a link to a guy who had put a VW generator or alternator on his loop. The installation required turning down the OD of the gen/alt housing-still looking in the archives. Joe in St Louis |
