From out here in the e-zone all shots are long shots. BEFORE we go any further try a simple swat at switching the plug wires. It is all too easy to get them in the wrong holes. Let us know and we'll take you through one step at a time.
Good luck ....

Plug wires mixed up?

I'm kind of bummed, the engine I've put so much time (and cash) into over the winter wouldn't start when I finally got to try it. I'm looking for any suggestions but I do know it's hard to diagnose over the
internet.
I'm getting spark (new plugs) I'm getting fuel (fresh gas) I'm not getting ANY attempts at actual firing I set the carb idle mixture screws as described in the manual (1.5 turns
LH, 1.75 turns RH)
I am fairly confident I followed the manual/Guzziology so that: 1)the cam drive gear meshes with the crank gear at the correct spot based on the paint marks 2)the distributor is in correct position relative to static timing mark (notch is at 6:00 when LH side reaches static timing mark w/ valves closed)
