Notched splines on tranny input.
Try adjusting the clutch cable for more or less slack. Sometimes, for
reasons unknown (as on my bike) this will fix it for a while.
If that doesn't work, do the mineral spirits bath trick. That usually
works for about 1000 miles.
If that doesn't work, replace ithe plates and input.

First gear is the toughest...not so much of a problem when moving and going thorugh the rest of the gears. My thoughts are that it is either an intermediate plate that warps as it gets warm or the springs or push rod is binding a bit when the clutch is eased out. Not the cables...they appear to be smooth.
