Richard,
No help on the U-joint, but I think the single wire indicator is
grounded through its base to the instrument panel. I think there is
also a wire from the instrument panel to the lower intstrument 'tray'
(I'm not sure what else you would call the lower part) that grounds the
instrument panel to the bike.
