Hi Bob,
The intake manifolds being different length have nothing to do with your "starboard" (didn't know we were riding boats) side cylinder not firing. It ran fine before with them that way, right?
Likely, it's not the coil either. But if your heart is set on buying a coil anyway, get a Bosch "Blue Coil" for a '70 VW Beetle. JC Whitney has them as do lots of other places. Any good foreign auto parts place should have one or get the latest copy of "Hot VWs" magazine at the grocery store and order one from any of the many advertisers. Usually run about $25-$30.
Beware of cheap copies - the real McCoy should not "slosh" when you shake it and will usually have a Bosch part number stamped on the bottom. The real Blue Coil will withstand a lot more vibration than your average Echlin or other auto parts store brand coil. The only ignition failure I've ever had on my '69 Ambo was an Echlin coil I used to replace my leaky original Marelli. The Echlin failed three months after installation, the Bosch has been on there for three years. Cheers,
Charlie

Measured the intake manifolds on my Ambo. The port measures 1.15 in and the starboard measures 1.25 in. Could that have anything to do with starboard side not firing? Seems doubtful as carb controls how much air goes in. Also, I found that the coil on my Ambo is not a Marelli but a 12 volt coil from a Chrysler product. If I were to purchase a new coil what would I ask for at an auto parts store, just some Chrysler coil or would any old 12 volt coil do? Thanks, Bob |
