I started the Eldo yesterday for the first time since mid December
also. I turned on the gas and let it sit for about five minutes while I
chipped up some ice at the end of the driveway. Choked it and it started
right up, I didn't even have to jump it. Cant do that with my boat and
battery is about three times as large plus it takes forever to get the fuel
pumping. I try to keep the floats full of fuel even when it is to cold in my
unheated garage to start the Eldo. I turn the fuel on about once every two
weeks for a few minutes and give the boat a few pumps at the same time. I
also keep the tanks topped off to prevent condensation. I oil fog the boat
but not the bike, too messy. I have done this for years and it seems to keep
the sediment out of the carb. I don't dare to leave the fuel on as the
floats can stick on occasion and flood the oil with gas especially if the
bike is on the side stand (been there, done that).
I rode around the block but didn't go farther as the roads around
here have a lot of sandy wet dirt on them and were almost as bad as ice in
spots. Sure did feel good to ride though.

Subject: hard start
Yesterday the first nice day that I had a chance to get out I had a hard time starting my 73 eldo. The battery is fine and it started right up, but until it warmed up a bit it sputtered, popped, and backfired quite a lot running rather ragged. After that it ran fine. Any ideas what might be the cause? I never had this problem before. Vince in NY |
