For chrome, I have been using Solvol Autosol. On really difficult spots I use it
carefully with XXXX Steel wool. Several museums use it on industrial
collections. It is too harsh for silver or softer metals, but was designed for
chrome. Just make sure all polish residues are removed if you use it.
