Joe and I had a discussion about this once...
They can be used in two ways:
You can thread the stud portion into the tab on the frame and lock it in place with the nut. Then once the battery cover is on, thread the knob portion on (use o-rings or rubber washers where you want to avoid scuffage). Or use them like the originals - lock the stud portion into the knob portion with the nut then insert through the battery cover and thread into the frame tab (use rubbers to avoid scuffage once again). I have a set of Joe Kenney's repros, which are a long aluminum knob with a 6mm threaded rod on the end, and a nut. The parts book shows a little (rubber?) part in between that is NLA.
