i also make sure i have a good clean connection between gearbox casting &
battery tray via one of the 4 bolts on top of gearbox. this is to earth the
engine unit and (very important) earth the starter motor.
if you have powder coated frame, might not get good connection via engine
bolts.

Fred: From (poor) memory, the ground from the battery goes to your battery shelf, I think there's a separate hole towards the back on the right side. Use a toothed washer here, and make sure you have a good clean ground between the tray and at least one bolt where it mounts to the tranny. The long thick separate cable you mention may be for the positive going to the starter solenoid. Another important grounding point is the lower front bolt holding the right toolbox/rear fender/battery tray together. Your regulator ground goes here, and it also functions as the rear fender ground for the taillight. John Prusnek
