Kieth,
Just disconect the linkage cotterpins and pull the arm off the shaft comming
out of there. The shaft and shiftr#@#$n spring will come out in the cover.
Scrap your goo off and replace the gasket and the cover with everything
still in it. Easybreezy japaneezy.
While you back there with the cotterpins out and linkage off disconnect the
clutch cable and pull the cotterpin and arm the the cable go to. Use a
magnet to pull the part the clutch arm pushes in on. The throwout bearing
should come out with that whole kit and kaboodle. It will be hold on the
back of the guts you pull out cause it should be greased up. It might be in
2 parts so be carefull or you'll be picking up little bearings. Inspect
everything: oring, bearing, case bore, ect. From there, using the magnet
pull the clutch rod from the bored hole on the case you just pulled the
bearing from.
This can be done while the trans is in the bike. You might have to pull the
trans mount bolt and loosen the front engine mount bolt in order to jack the
back of the trans up to get room to pull the clutch rod. Can't remember if
there's enough room or if it hit the swingarm.
Depending on how much oil you are loosing from the main seal area is what I
would look at on weather or not to replace it or just live with it. After 3
seals I would star to think that there's something not right with the sael
surface.

Subject: Tranny Questions
Ambo 4 speed tranny, have a leak around the square/rectangular shape
plate that covers the return spring/shifter area - I think the Guzzi
dealer never used a gasket -looks like goop was used to seal it.
Ordered a new gasket, was wondering what all it takes to replace it,
i.e., do I need to disconnect the shifter/what needs to be removed?
Also, as previously posted, I still have the idle drop to stall problem
when pulling in the clutch, but only after the tranny has warmed up.
Moe sent me a note and said it is either the clutch's hanging up if they
were installed incorrectly (ndy said they were OK though) or the
throwout bearing is binding due to a worn out clutch rod or something to
that nature. Mark E mentioned a plastic cup on the rod. Guzzi dealer
receipt says he replaced the throwout bearing (needle style and is still
good), rear tranny case, inner and outer body. Wonder if he messed
something up? Question I have is can I remove the rod through the rear
tranny cover, do I need to remove the whole rear tranny cover, and most
importantly, can I check this out with the tranny IN THE BIKE? Or does
the tranny need to be pulled again? Another nightmare is starting to
appear again, oil can be seen between the cases again - it's just
starting to show, not yet like it was, but a few more miles on the bike
will tell the tale. That will be 3 main seal replacements and still a
leak - go figure. I have just about run out of patience with Patience,
a for sale sign is not too far off in her future................
