John,
Your plan is sound. Had the same problem with Patience a while back
too. Try exciting the field as you say, may get things working again.
My problem was the gen was shot and took out the regulator with it.
Reuilt the gen and bought a new regulator from MG and now all is well.

Went to take the Ambo for a ride yesterday. Had it on the Battery Tender overnight just for routine maintenance. When I fied it up, noticed that the generator light was on very bright.
