Subject: in defense of the 4-speed

There was a guy a while back who had an article in the
MAGNOC newsletter explaining how to upgrade the
5-speed tranny on your eldo to a 4-speed. I am
inclined to agree with his sentiments. I can't see
that the 5-speed gets you much: the ratio of 5th gear
is no higher then 4th on the 4 speed, first gear isn't
as low as 1st on the 4 speed, it weighs
twenty-something pounds more then the 4-speed, and it
is less attractive (to my tastes). They guy who wrote
the article also complained about the longevity fo the
needle bearings in comparison to the bushings in the
4-speed.
The 5-speed is, in comparison to the 4-speed, a
close-ratio transmission. This is no doubt do to the
fact that Eldo's have such a narrow power band.
