Won't matter with that gear what cycle the engine's on. Between the paint
marks and the key there's no way to get it f'd up. That's just the one off
the crank. The cam gear is different, this should be aligned with the crank
gear(paint) while at TDC on the left cly. Check this alignment when you get
the crank gear back on. If it all doesnt line up the cam gear is off.
Now you need a degree wheel and a whole lot of "patience"
Once everything is in place(cover, pully and nut) that gear stay's in place.
It should be a slight bitch to slide on the crank, should have to tap it on
gently.

Kev is right on, the gear slipped out while the engine is running.
There is no nut holding that center gear on, I believe it is just held
on by the cover. I lined up the center gear mark with that of the
camshaft gear wheel - glad I checked out how it was installed previously
- quick question is what cycle of the motor should it be on or is it
irrelevant so long as the gear marks are aligned? Anyways, I'm sure
this is not the problem with the clacking, that will be ongoing. I'm
looking at 2 folks to take on this project as I am totally out of my
realm here and don't have the time or "Patience" to deal with this.

Whoa, hold on there. That gear does run directly off the crank but it probablly would come off while trying to run the bike without the cover and the nut. It's a light press fit onto the shaft isn't it? You'll still want to inspect the keyway but....That in itself being the problem don't make sense. Hopefully the gears aren't damaged. Paul Richmond, Va
