If the top gear is "wobbling" and the noise is coming from behind it
I would guess that the cam is broken. Though, I find it hard to believe that
the engine would run at all if the cam was broken. But that would explain
why one plug was clean and the other was black as one or more valves may not
be opening properly. At this point I would not run the engine anymore until
the cam is checked. If you can move the cam gear straight back and forward a
slight amount that would be normal. If you can tilt the gear at all then
there is a serious problem with the cam or the gear.
To remove the cam you must remove the heads and cylinders so you
can remove the lifters. Then you can remove the nut from the front of the
cam gear and remove the gear. Then there are three bolts that hold the cam
in, once those are removed the cam should slid out towards the front. If the
cam is, in fact, broken then you may have damage to the engine block. If
memory serves me right there are no bearings for the cam to ride in , the
cam just rides in the block. If the there is enough play in the block to
allow the cam gear to wobble it may not be repairable. I don't know if there
is a bearing that could be fitted to repair the block or not. Anyone else
out there know? A used cam and lifters should not be hard to find and should
be replaced as a set.

No stethoscope, can try to find one, but my best guess now is it sounded like it was coming from behind the top most largest timing gear, which I gather is the camshaft? I was trying to make sure the valve timing was on also, there's a white mark on the largest gear, but I can't find a mark on the middle gear, wonder if the valve timing somehow skipped a tooth? Also looked like that large gear was wobbling a bit, could have been just the angle I was looking but I thought it was wobbling a bit. Also figured it couldn't be the gen as it wasn't connected and I still got that clacking. I wonder how an engine with a mere 6100 miles could have developed a mechanical problem so soon in it's life, I can see gaskets and such from sitting but not mechanical, who knows.....
