Keith:
Just about the same thing happened while my wife was riding the Ambo;
lots of screaming and smoking and drama from the front end (of the
bike). I pulled the gen cover on the side of the road, the belt was
roached. I cut it off and had enough charge to get home (you'd be
surprised how far you can get if you don't need the starter and
lights--I ran my '40 Indian for weeks on a 6v lantern battery).
Sounded loud and tinny up front when the engine was revving a bit, valves sounded OK, but I had deduced that the noise was coming from the generator/belt area. |
My problem turned out to be that the armature bearings went south.
I'll bet your generator rebuilder didn't replace them, they may have
felt fine at the time. They're simple enough to replace. As someone
mentioned, the belt doesn't have to be real tight. In addition to
cracking the generator bracket, it will roach your bearings. My 2 cents.
Let us know what it ends up being.

On my way home from work yesterday minding my own business, about 2-3 miles from home, I hear "bang"! Followed by gen light coming on, followed by the in-mistakeable smell of burning rubber. Ah s--t! Gen belt just snapped/torched! |
