Well, thanks for the advice guys, but I'm not so sure. These bags were involved in a fairly wicked crash, a 70mph speed wobble that turned into having the Eldo slidingon both sides and upside down, sliding with it's wheels in the air and skating on the police windshield and rear rack. Both bags have clean breaks thru them in either the body of the bags or the lids, as well as cracks that have fiberglass hair coming out of them but are not thru cracks, and general cosmetic scuffing. It will be a significant repair, and I'm not sure I'm up to it because in the end I don't "just" want them patched, I want them to look like new. | Fiberglass repair is easy. It's like a combo of JB weld and paper mache. Just make sure you ventilate and wear mask gloves and glasses. Make sure the mask will handle fumes. Goop it on there. It will look ugly at first. Snad it down. Paint. Easy as pie. There is also a fiberglass impregnated putty that works real well for the holes.

Dennis- glass is really easy to work with. i'm betting that you could do 'em yourself, and do a fine job, too! Ian, First, I apologize for misspelling your last name. It was a 50/50 coin toss between Atkins & Adkins, and I mistakenly decided you were Chet's son. Second, as you know it's all in fun. It's just that you make me crazy riding around on that gorgeous motorcycle with those cobbled up dang saddlebags! However, since my Wixoms are in the garage with crash damage, and not even on my bike, who am I to talk! To those about to inquire, no I don't want to sell them, or the latches. If anybody has an extra set of latches, however, I'll furnish Ian's home address to you! Anybody who knows anyone who can do fiberglass repair on Wixom bags affordably, let me know. Dennis...Dennis...Dennis,
You are such a funny guy :-) Actually....my bungee cord latching mechanism has proved to be a great (and inexpensive) system that has kept the lids of the bags tight for many miles. The nice multi-coloured cords add a little personality too :-)
I love the ribbn' though :-)

Richard, Perhaps Ian Atkins can contribute to your dilemma here. Ian has some marvelous ideas on latching mechanisms for Wixom Saddlebags. The guy's a regular engineering wizard when it comes to them there latches. :-) Dennis Jones |
