I took it as tongue-in-cheek. But it gave me a chance to write on something
that obviously irks me.
I bought my first Loop in 1977, went to look at "an old bike over in
Alameda", CA. And I fell in love (a 71 LAPD). The guy that was selling it
thought it was leaking like a sieve and didn't want to fix it. I bought it,
replaced the breather lines to stop the "leaks", and rode it for years.
If you ride one of these old bikes, I agree you have to make changes. I am
in the process of adding that 4LS to my 71 (after I replace the steering
head bearings, boy are they binding). I will be able to return it to
original though, and I am keeping records and marking parts. After working
on the engine, I even have all the original bolts I have replaced labeled
and put away.
OK so I am nuts. But I have a Triumph that I am slowly bringing back from
the basket, and I wish the guy hadn't thrown many of the originals bolts and
washers away. And I wish he had made records rather than a very heavy
puzzle.
As for value, buyers don't solely determine that, sellers and buyers both
do. And loops are becoming more rare with the passing years.

Ross, None of us will argue that the bikes are undervalued. I think that
most folks that own them don't care all that much about originality,
(although my Ambo is pretty much as it left the factory) but would rather
ride them instead of showing them. As far as asking prices, you can only ask
(if you want to sell) what the buyers in the market will pay. I'm not
knocking Moe in the least, he (as does Mark) has a business to run and it is
my understanding that he is selling the bike for one of his clients. My note
was made sort of tongue in cheek as I was seriously surprised that it was
up this high having watched them on EBay for the last couple of years. I
would have expected the bidding to top out around $7-8K.
