The first (and only) time I tried that, I almost had the wheel out...gave
one more small yank, and the bike fell over. Damn if I'll do it that way
again without another person there to hold it.

This does work, It's somewhat of a pain with by yourself, but it
does work. The first time I did it I was surprised that it worked as well
as
it did. Not very confidence inspiring with the bike almost laying on its
side
;-O
Just be careful.

Raise the bike up on the center stand and remove the brake stay and
actuating rod. Loosen pinchbolts,
remove axle bolt. Then lean the bike over on to its side stand while
still
on the center stand. There should be just enough room to slip the
rear wheel
out. It work best with two people, one to hold the bike and one to
get
the rear wheel. Good Luck
