Does the bike "walk" with the clutch disengaged? It will be hard to switch
gears if the clutch isn't fully disengaging. Could be stuck from sittin'.
Does the clutch arm have full movement? Some times they are adjusted wrong
and hit the back of the case. Is the shifter linkage hitting anything that
is preventing it from full movement? Does the lever return after trying to
shift or just flop there? Might want to drain the oil and look for any sort
of "foreign material".

If you pull in the clutch, will the bike roll easily? This means that
the clutch is disengaging and working correctly. If not, then the
clutch plates are frozen to the flywheel and need to freed up. I'm not
sure just how to do this on a bike.

Maybe something broke in the tranny that has jammed the gears which is
the reason the PO put the bike in the barn since the 80's. If the
clutch does work, try shifting gears with the rear wheel moving, clutch
in, and the bike on the centerstand. The moving rear wheel will turn
tranny innards enough to maybe free up the gear selector.

As to the rear shock, they were never the best shocks, even new. I
replaced mine with a set of Progressive. But I did keep the old shocks
to hang on my garage wall ... along with the stock mufflers... as objets
d'art. Now to find some unoccupied wall space....

metal items are rusty from sitting in the barn that really had
deteriorated over the years. I have a set of stock set of rear shock
springs to replace the rusty one on the bike. How do I get the old
springs off the rear shocks and replace them with the better ones?
