After looking closely at the gear, it appears that part of a tooth was
missing for a while before the break....I had been hearing a noise that I
couldn't figure out for quite a while...put another gear on yesterday...bike
runs fine and is quieter......so, I guess if you run gears and have a noise
you might want to inspect...really not a hard job.

Yep, mine broke on a dirt back road in the middle of a poor farming area in Louisiana. I had to push the sidecar rig for two miles before I found a guy that fetched a horse trailer and hauled me 80 miles or so back to the LA rally. The cam gear had a small chunk missing out of it that looked quite porous, like a bad casting from the get go. Luckily Gene ran me up to his shop in ElDorado the next morning and sold me a used gear he had on the shelf.
