David,
Maybe the ring was never installed? Hard to believe it but after hearing the
rag story and others you never know. I doubt that the rings would be ground
to powder.
Consider the fact that had you not left the little plastic thingy in the
intake port you would have not discovered the ring missing until later...and
possibly more damage was done. The Loop Gods work in mysterious ways :-)

Unfortunately, when synching my carbs via advice from a fellow Guzzi rider, a small piece of plastic wire got sucked into the intake on the right side when turning the bike over, without me knowing. Started the bike, let it run, and then could not get it to run very well at all. I then noticed that one of the pieces of plastic I had used to synch the carbs was missing. Took off the carb and found the material lodged in the intake port but could not pull it out, as it was in both the intake and exhaust valves. So, pulled the head, and cylinder, and noticed that my lowest ring was totally missing. Pulled the oil pan, found metallic remnants, but no big pieces of the ring. I pulled the other side and took a look down into the bike with a light from both sides, and the bottom. WHERE IS THE RING? My cylinders both look good, with all of the cross hatching still in place, pistons looked good. What do I do now? David 1972 Eldorado learning project. |
