The world famous big twin neutral finder is located behind the starter
on the transmission. There are two wires attached to it. One provides
a ground for the neutral light on your dash. the other wire provides a
ground for the starter relay located at the rear of the battery
compartment next to the regulator. Figure out which is which and leave
the one for the light right where it is. Attach the other one to a good
ground and your bike will start in any gear at any time.

If your bike does not accurately indicate neutral you can easily pull
the switch and fiddle with it until it does. Most of these switches
leak or mist oil unless sealed with good quality gasket goo. If the
switch does not pull out easily try loosening the middle post. If
overtightened it can deform the 30 year old plastic housing. As I
recall I began to loose my shape around 30 years of age as well.
