well i would as the rear bearing on the shaft the pushrod goes through is
lubed by gearbox oil which could leak through the hollow centre onto the
clutch plates.
as to official verification of seal orientation, i have looked at 3 manuals
now:
haynes: don't say
guzziology: recommends O rings & doesn't mention installation of OEM seals.
70/80s factory manual: don't say either but does confirm it is to stop oil
leaking forward onto clutch plates. confusingly it contains a diagram (which
i'll PM you) showing seals on shaft with fat end towards engine
all very confusing. have a look at the diagram & make your own mind up.
sorry i can't be more helpfull. it's a while since i used factory seals.
when you take them out they're always loose anyhow.
