Charlie,
Hey, that's excellent. If I knew it was gonna be for sale, I'd have tried
to get it myself! Just kidding (sort of)! Remembering your description
that monoshock and how difficult it was to adjust, I think I would favor
going back to twin shocks. Although the monoshock looks cool, and
differentiates the bike, if it don't work what's the point? Should be a fun
project, and we'll all look forward to the results. The LeMans I is the
bike that started my love affair with Moto Guzzi. Went to the 1977 Loudon,
New Hampshire AMA Roadraces, and saw Mike Baldwin win on one. As I was
leaving the track, I saw several guys from Massachusetts with matching
LeMans I's pull out of the parking lot and rip up the road. I remember how
they looked and sounded to this day. I was just a poor, divorced soul and
couldn't afford such exotic Italian motorcycles, so I just set aside my
desires for a Guzzi until I could afford one. Took me 19 years, and now I
have 3.
Congratulations!
Dennis Jones

Looked on Topica last night, but failed to find it. |
they move somewhere else? I'm not getting rid of anything to get this LeMans, just doing some |
financing. It will fill the empty Sportbike spot in my garage. I nearly bought a '78 Lemans as my first Guzzi ever, but was only 19 and |
unable to swing it. I guess I'm trying to go back and get the one the got away (sort of). So in 2002 it looks like it will be: '69 Ambo for Classic/Touring, '77 R100RS for Sport-touring, '78 LeMans 1 for my Sportbike, and the '87 Cagiva 350 Ala Rossa for Dual-Sport riding. Kinda weird working on a Tonti framed bike after the Ambos and Eldos. The LeMans is quite modified, some of it nicely done, some of it not. It's |
converted to a monoshock rear suspension and has Marzocchi internals in |
front fork (so I've been told). I'm not sure if it will stay monoshock, |
shock is an air-spring unit and is very difficult to keep at the correct pressure. I may just go back to good quality dual shocks. It will |
need to be rewired as there is no keyed ignition switch, just two toggle switches (one of which is hidden and looks like an arming switch for some sort of missile) and the wire is all red. The headlight works on one beam only and the taillight not all. There's no signals (which I'll need to |
inspection) and it still has the original (cheesy) switches. It does have |
Dyna III ignition, but the coils look like ones for a Chevy. In short, there's a lot of sorting to do if it's going to be reliable and safe, but I'm looking forward to the challenge.
