Not true! However, to get the tranny out without the engine probably isn't really worth the effort. It's involve rotating the engine up on the front mount while doing amazingly close quarter manouvering of the tranny. It cannot be measured in inches but rather millimetres to know how fucking tight this manouver is. The good news is you can remove the cover enough with everything in situ to replace the spring.
