Ian,
It stands to reason that some of the vintage bike racers would have come up with a "homebrew" solution. Sounds like you lucked out finding somebody in the area. I know that Vintage Brake has a anywhere from a two week to three month wait, depending on what service(s) one's brake require.

Tom,
There is a fellow that lives nearby who deals with this kind of thing. He is an vintage racer and does all kinds of drum bikes....not just Loops.
He told me that he takes the whole wheel assembly and basically makes the brake fit the drum the best way possible. Of course he adds the better softer compound and when he sends the wheel back to you he gives instructions on how to properly mount the wheel etc....
This is likely something that you know all about. Really there is no rocket science involved.....just getting the best compound and working to get the most out of the assembly.
I also suppose that after doing a bunch you get the feel of how to do it right. He's done a bunch and does many of the racers around these parts. I figure if anyone is interested in the best braking it's these guys.

Ian,
Is there someone out there who has a magic brake formula, other than Mark or Vintage Brake? Any idea what your friend is doing that might be different than what Elisabeth has already tried?
As I have mentioned before, Vintage Brake relined my brakes with riveted Ferodo 2520 (front) and VB3000 (rear). I turned the shoes down to match the drum diameters (as instructed), and since they've bedded in (after about 100 miles)I've had brakes that come pretty close to disc brake performance. The only weak link seems to be the replacement brake cable that I picked up tends to stretch a bit so I am looking for one of the heavier original ones.
