First let me apologize for the typing errors on my last post. I was in
a hurry as we were getting ready to leave.
If you are looking for a pair of high quality ,low cost driving lights
you may find the "Grote" work lights appealing. Don't be fooled these
are not garden tractor or semi trailer trash. They are excellent quality
stainless steel rimmed pressure molded housing 50 Watt H-3 halogen
units. The lights are available three patterns , spot, trapezoid and
flood . Fifty watt H-3 bulbs are standard and 35 thru 135 watt H-3 bulbs
are available at most any auto parts store. The 50 watt units are
AWESOME,by far the brightest I have used. Tom Bowes and I are using
these lights and we both have had excellent results. Tom used his
trapezoid pattern lights as supplied with the stock matte finish . I
filled , sanded and painted mine high gloss black ,they took and held
paint very well. mine are the "spot" pattern as opposed to the
trapezoid Tom is using. I have had car drivers and other bikers comment
on the excellent visibility when approaching in day light , a real
safety factor. Make sure of course the lights are well aimed for night
time driving with oncoming traffic ,or turned off altogether.
The lights sell at our local farm supply for $18.00 , Grote turns up
many sources when searched in Yahoo. Let me know if you have trouble
locating them.
Now,if you want to couple your rear turn signals with your brake
lights no need for a high dollar cycle shop coupler! Tail light
converters for automobile/truck use from the local auto parts will fill
the bill nicely. They are available at most auto parts for less than
$15.00 ,small enough to tuck away and reliable in use. A look at the
instructions should provide all you need for hook up. Now you can have
the added security of an extra brake light and the turn sigs will
function automotive style. ( In Michigan and most other states the turn
sig lens should be red when it is also used as a stop light.
A tip for a heavy duty tail light replacement for the venerable
1034/1157 bulb is the new 3496 . This one is a heavy duty bulb with a
very bright 43 CP stop light filament . They are pricey but tough and
BRIGHT.
Happy , safe riding to all,
Gary Cheek
