Ian,
They were made from Buna-Nitrile, same stuff you used for the gas cap
gasket. My guess is that it is more a case of the Buna being too soft
for the application. Consequently the rotor for the fuel petcock twists
it around too much and tears off little pieces, which end up where you
don't want them. I made some up in Viton today and so far they seem to
be working just fine. I will check the fuel flow again in the morning
just to be sure. The Viton has a hardness index of about 75, compared to
the 50 of Buna and should be more resistant to tearing by the rotor.
I also tried Teflon, but it was way too hard and the valves leaked fuel.
Too bad, because the Teflon sure gave them a silky smooth feel.
