I'm guilty as charged. Perhaps your shifter return spring busted and

After it smoked (appeared to come from the starter itself) I let her sit for a couple of minutes and tried again. It fired right up. I am hoping the battery may be going south. I also suspect the switch which has giving me problems for a couple of weeks. Regardless I may just pull the starter this weekend and clean and inspect it.
