Or as I do just pull the spark plug and place your finger over the
hole and 'feel' the compression stroke instead of pulling the valve cover.
Saves a little time and gasket wear. Of course you could always check your
valves if you went to the trouble of pulling the covers.

No such thing. Especially if you've moved the pulley. The pully on
the
crank has the timing marks. It can be removed and reinstalled in
any of
three positions and only one is correct. IF you have moved it, you
need to
pull the left side valve cover and both spark plugs. Turn the
engine over
(counterclockwise motion of the crank as it is moving forward, or
clockwise
if you are up front looking back at it) and watch the valves so you
can
determine compression stroke TDC. Once you are there, re-install
the pulley
so the timing marks are near lined up. Don't have to be perfect
because the
errors are only in 120 degree increments. If you are smart, you
will put
little paint marks on the crank and both pieces of the pulley so
you'll never
lose track in the future. Now, set your point gap at 0.016 and use
an
electronic strobe light on the left side spark wire to set the
timing.
