Perhaps a carb problem? High idle jets partially clogged? Any dirt in
the fuel lines that may be getting into the carbs and clogging it up?
How is the inside of the gas tank? I have had an occasional miss at
high RPM's and am attributing it to bad gas that had sat in the tank for
9 months.

Hi, First let me introduce myself... my name is Barry and I live in Bellingham, WA. and ride a 1973 Eldorado (civilian model). Have been lurking for a while... gleaning info. I have a couple of questions/problems and hope that some of you may have answers or suggestions. My bike will randomly have a miss or backfire problem at RPM's over 4000. The scenario is as follows: The engine will roll right up to 4000RPM just as strong as can be but when reaching this point, it acts sort of like a boat engine that has "loaded-up" after idling and trolling for an hour. It really sounds and feels like there is too much fuel and not enough spark the engine hesitates and grumbles and backfires. This doesn't happen on every ride, but when it does, it is consistent. Other days, I can take the bike out and it runs right up to 5500-6000RPM smoothly and decelerates without backfire. I have replaced the cap and rotor (rotor was cracked) and the plug caps and wires. I haven't replaced the condenser yet... because I thought a weak condenser should be consistently weak. It ran fine for weeks with no sign of this problem and then the problem re-appeared last week. The only common thing I can deduce is that the problem occurs when the engine oil is filled up to the top mark on the stick (I measure it by dipping it back in rather than screwing in and then unscrewing). A local Guzzi mechanic laughed when I suggested this as the culprit. However, I changed the oil yesterday and filled it back up to about an eight of an inch below high mark and the bike runs fine!!??! Any ideas? Thanks, Barry Dikeman 73 Eldo |
