The downside being your frame gets scratched up and your pipes are
permanently marred where the clamps attach. I run mine without them and have
had no problems what so ever. But I check my exhaust rings with a spanner
before any rides. They have yet to be loose after new gaskets, anti-seize
and the second tightening.
Ian, are you talking about the cast aluminum clamps? I think Moe @ Cycle
Garden told me he could get $50-100 apiece for those.

I'd say pretty important.
Without the clamps (no muffs on yet) the header seems pretty flimsy.
With
them in place it is rock solid. at 15 bones a peice, it seems a very
good,
inexpensive item to have on board.
